Dykes Memorial Medal .... The highest award for an Iris,
given to only one Iris per year since 1927.
This award is named in honor of William R. Dykes,
famed early 20th century
British Botanist, and author
in
1913 of The Genus Iris.
Annually
since 1927, the American Iris Society has awarded
this designation to the one iris that has previously won both
"Best Iris in its Class", and the "Award of Merit",
a process
requiring at
least 3 or 4 years from the year of introduction.
Indeed, the Medal was not awarded in 9 of the years since 1927,
because no iris met the stringent requirements.
His Iris Garden has 38 of the 75 Dykes Medalists growing
in our display garden.
